History of the Club
Hythe Lawn Tennis Club is a
friendly club situated in the Cinque Port town of Hythe in
Kent. The club was formed in 1889 when it was connected to
the Hythe Cricket Club. After 57 years, in 1946, the club
became separate from the cricket club becoming its own
entity.
Rumor has it that Hythe Lawn
Tennis Club is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the world!
The club is situated along
a towpath adjacent to the famous Royal Military Canal and
has been here for over 110 years.

The club caters for Winter
and Summer seasons because in May 2005 work began on 2 of
the original 6 grass courts and the adjacent 2 hard courts.
All 4 of these courts were dug up and replaced by 4 brand
new macadam hard courts. This means that the club now has 4
hard courts and 4 grass courts.
Social Tennis
Senior Members and Juniors
with Senior Status, are encouraged to attend Mix-In
sessions. These are where a player of any standard is
invited down to the club to socialize and play tennis the
way it should be played...by having fun! The Mix-In sessions
are held on Wednesday evenings and on Saturday afternoons.
On a typical July Saturday afternoon, the club is thriving
with friendly club players who enjoy all aspects of tennis.
On a Wednesday evening in the Winter, people are asked to
pay 50p towards the floodlights.
There are also
opportunities to play in regular set fours. These can be
arranged by anyone and played at anytime that fits around
the court time allocated to each group. Generally, the best
times to play are in the morning and afternoons during the
week and after coaching times in the evenings.
To see when you may be able
to play, click here to view the court timetable.
Match Play
For those of you that want
to play in matches, there are match practice nights. On
Monday Evenings from 6pm it is the Men's practice night and
on Thursday Evenings it is the turn of the Ladies. Players
wishing to pay on these nights during Winter months are
asked to pay £1 to the cost of the floodlights.
Coming to these evenings
means that you show and interest in representing the club in
club matches. If you cannot make these evenings but wish to
take part in matches, you can find a list in the club house
where you can put your name down and express an interest in
playing. Or you can contact the Match Secretary and he will
inform Match Captains that you have expressed an interest.
It doesn't matter what standard of play you are at, the
teams we enter cater for all levels of ability so don't
hesitate to put your name forward!
The club enters teams in
many leagues across the county, this includes Men's, Ladies,
Mixed and Veteran teams. The teams are put into East Kent,
Kent, Ashford and Dover and District leagues. To find out
how the club is getting on, go to the league pages.
Coaching

The club has its very own
coaching scheme in place. These are run independently by
Nick Skelton who is a LTA Licensed Tennis Coach! We do have
other qualified coaches, so for more
information about coaching, and the other qualified coaches, please visit the Coaching page.
Social Events
There are many social
events throughout the year. These include a number of
activities such as Quiz Nights, progressive suppers and
barbeques. There are also social tournaments held every year
such as two generation tournaments and Men's and Ladies
Days. A list of these events and dates on which they are
held are found in the clubhouse on the notice board and in
the What's On section of the website!
We also are twinned with
the French tennis club Boulogne and we organize trips going
over there every 2 years. We take turns to visit one another
and is a very good and enjoyable day out. Currently, we are
in the process of teaming up with a German club, more info
will follow!

In the October half-term,
Nick took 8 juniors with him to the clay courts of Beach
Club, Font de sa Cala, Mallorca! It was a very good week of
fun packed tennis coaching and fitness training throughout
the week. There are plans to do it again next year!

the club

Every year the tennis club
are allocated a set number of Wimbledon tickets. To obtain
these tickets, you must attend the AGM and be a fully paid

tickets. You are given a ticket number and are drawn out of
a hat at the end of the AGM. BEWARE, the tickets are NOT
free you have to pay for them! Also tickets are on a first
come first serve basis, e.g. if your ticket number was the
first out of the hat, you will have more choice on which day
to go then someone further down the pecking order!
If you sign up half way
through the season (e.g. Winter) there will be a slight
deduction of membership. But all players that want to join
at the beginning of the season should get their membership
